    Free HR booklet

UK employment law, in plain English.

A booklet for owners and managers of small and medium-sized businesses. Nine chapters, from hiring to dismissal, with every 2026/27 rate and the 2027 changes in one place. It turns like a real booklet on a phone, an iPad or a laptop, and prints to A5.

Every rate and date is for the 2026/27 tax year and correct as at October 2026. Each chapter opens with the short version.

No cost. No card. One email, so we know who we wrote it for.

Three covers of the HR Made Simple booklet: Apex in black and racing red at the front, with the navy Origin and Sterling editions behind it.

    01 · What’s inside

Four parts. Nine chapters. No jargon.

Employment law was not written to trip you up, but it was written by lawyers. The booklet takes the questions owners actually ask and answers them in the order they come up, from the first advert to the last day.

    Hiring and status

Employee, worker or self-employed, and why the label on the contract does not decide it. Then adverts, interviews, right to work checks and what goes in the contract.

    Day to day

Minimum wage traps, holiday pay, tips, sick pay from day one, family leave and how to manage absence without getting it wrong.

    When things go wrong

Grievance, disciplinary and performance plans step by step, then every type of dismissal and the notice each one needs.

    What is coming

The 2027 changes, including unfair dismissal after six months, with a checklist of what to do before they land.

    02 · Why keep it

Short enough to read. Useful enough to keep.

It is written to be read once, front to back, and then kept to hand for the day someone asks a question you were not expecting.

    The short version first

Every chapter opens with what you need to know in a paragraph, before any of the detail.

    Cheat sheets and checklists

Tables to scan in a hurry and checklists you can tick as you go, saved on your own device.

    Three styles

Read it in Apex, Origin or Sterling, whichever suits. Same words, three looks.

    Not legal advice

It is a best-practice guide. Where a situation is complex or high-risk, take advice before you act.

    03 · Who it’s for

People running a team without an HR department.

    • The owner of a restaurant, bar or hotel with a rota to fill and no one to ask.
    • The builder or contractor with subbies on site who is not sure who counts as staff.
    • The new manager who has just been handed a team and a disciplinary in the same week.
    • Anyone who wants to know what changes in 2027 before it lands on their desk.

    04 · The link

Ask for it, and Rob will send it to you.

Tell us who you are and Rob will email the booklet to you himself, usually within a working day. It is sent by hand rather than by robot, because knowing who we wrote it for is the only thing we want in return.

We will email you the booklet, and we may follow up once to ask what you made of it. We do not sell your details, and you can tell us to stop at any time. Full detail in our privacy notice.
